Olympic National Park Elopement: How Many Hours Do You Need?

When couples first start planning their Olympic National Park elopement, one of the biggest questions I hear is, “How many hours of photography do we actually need?” And I totally get it! If you’re skipping the traditional wedding, you might be wondering why you’d need an entire day of photography when your ceremony will probably last fifteen minutes. But here’s the thing: Your elopement day is so much more than your ceremony.

It’s the excitement of getting ready, the anticipation of seeing each other for the first time, exchanging vows in an incredible place, and all the adventures you get to share afterward. It’s stopping for a picnic beside an alpine meadow, exploring a forest trail, or watching the sun disappear over the Pacific Ocean. And in a place as big and diverse as Olympic National Park, there’s a lot to experience! The right amount of coverage really depends on what you want your wedding day to feel like. So let’s break down three different ways to experience an Olympic National Park elopement.

First, Think About the Experience, Not Just the Photography

One of the biggest misconceptions about elopement photography is that your photographer will be directing you and taking portraits the entire time. That’s definitely not how I approach elopements! Of course, we’ll make time for beautiful portraits. But so much of what I photograph happens naturally as you’re experiencing your wedding day. Maybe you’re sharing coffee together at your cabin before getting ready. Maybe you’re hiking through the forest, reading private vows beside a lake, or popping champagne after your ceremony. Maybe you’re celebrating with a few family members or having an incredible dinner together. All of those moments are part of your story. When you’re deciding how many hours you need, I encourage you to think about the things you’d love to do, rather than how many hours you want to spend in front of the camera.

Half-Day Elopements: 4–6 Hours

A half-day elopement is a wonderful fit for couples who want a simple, intentional wedding experience with a little adventure mixed in. With four to six hours, we can plan your ceremony, explore one or two nearby locations, and leave plenty of room for the moments that make your day meaningful. For example, you might exchange vows beneath the trees near Lake Crescent, explore the shoreline, and walk to a nearby waterfall. Or perhaps you’d rather head up to Hurricane Ridge for a mountain ceremony and a short hike with incredible views. Half-day elopements are especially great for couples who want to focus on one area of Olympic National Park without spending too much time driving between locations.

A half-day elopement might be right for you if:

  • You’re planning a relatively simple ceremony.
  • You want to explore one area of the park without a lot of driving.
  • You prefer shorter hikes or easily accessible locations.
  • You don’t need every part of your wedding day photographed.

The biggest thing to remember is that Olympic National Park is enormous! Four to six hours can go by surprisingly quickly when you factor in driving, walking, and taking time to enjoy the experience. That’s why I recommend keeping shorter elopements focused on one general area.

Full-Day Elopements: 8–10 Hours

If you’re dreaming of a wedding day filled with adventure, beautiful scenery, and time to really enjoy the experience, a full-day elopement might be the perfect fit. With eight to ten hours of coverage, we can tell a more complete story of your day, from getting ready and exchanging vows to exploring some of the incredible landscapes Olympic National Park has to offer. One of my favorite things about this area is how many different environments you can experience in a single day. You might start with a forest ceremony near Lake Crescent, explore the shoreline, and finish with a sunset hike in the mountains at Hurricane Ridge. Or maybe your adventure takes you from the lush Elwha Valley all the way to the rugged Pacific coast.

And we’re not spending all that time taking portraits! We can build in experiences that make your day feel personal, like a picnic, a longer hike, a stop for coffee, or simply taking a little time to soak in the scenery. Full-day elopements also give us more flexibility with lighting and timing. During the long summer days, we can even split photography coverage into two parts, allowing you to experience both sunrise and sunset without being photographed continuously throughout the day.

A full-day elopement might be right for you if:

  • You want getting-ready photographs and a more complete story of your wedding day.
  • You’re hoping to explore multiple landscapes, from forests and lakes to mountains or coastline.
  • You’d love to include hiking, a picnic, or another meaningful activity.
  • You want a relaxed timeline with room for spontaneous moments.
  • You’re interested in sunrise and sunset adventures without feeling rushed.
  • You have a small group of guests.

For many couples, a full-day elopement offers a wonderful balance of adventure, photography, and time to simply enjoy being together.

Two-Day Elopements: The Ultimate Olympic National Park Adventure

Okay, this is where things get really fun! One of the most exciting ways to elope in Olympic National Park is to spread your celebration over two days. A two-day elopement gives you the freedom to explore more of the park, include different activities, and create a wedding experience that feels completely your own. I especially love this option for couples who want to celebrate with family and friends while still having time for a private adventure.

For example, Carlynn and Jonathan planned an intimate coastal wedding with around 20 loved ones at Agate Beach Lodge, followed by an incredible private chef’s dinner. The following day, we headed into Olympic National Park to explore the forests and mountains together. They got to have both experiences without trying to squeeze everything into a single day. A two-day elopement is also wonderful if you’re hoping to explore locations that are farther apart, tackle a bigger hike, or include activities like kayaking, backpacking, or a scenic picnic.

A two-day elopement might be right for you if:

  • You want to celebrate with family and have a separate adventure together.
  • You’re dreaming of exploring several regions of Olympic National Park.
  • You’d like to include a bigger outdoor activity.
  • You want an experience that feels more like a getaway than a traditional wedding day.

And remember, you don’t have to wear your wedding clothes or have a formal ceremony on both days. Your elopement can be whatever you want it to be!

Don’t Forget About Driving Time!

One thing that surprises a lot of couples is just how much time it takes to travel between locations in Olympic National Park. There aren’t roads that cut through the middle of the Olympic Mountains, so even places that look close together on a map can require significant driving. For example, Lake Crescent and Hurricane Ridge are both on the northern side of the park, but getting between them still takes over an hour. And if you’re hoping to include the Pacific coast or Hoh Rainforest, you’ll need to account for even more travel or focus your elopement on the west side of the park. It’s one of the reasons I love helping couples build realistic timelines. We can absolutely experience multiple landscapes in a single day, but I never want you to spend your entire wedding rushing between parking lots!

So, How Much Time Should You Plan for Your Elopement?

Here’s a quick comparison of the three experiences:

Experience Best For
Half Day (4–6 Hours) A ceremony and relaxed exploration of one area
Full Day (8–10 Hours) Multiple landscapes, activities, and a complete wedding-day story
Two Days Family celebrations, bigger adventures, and exploring more of the park

There’s no single right answer, and you definitely don’t need to choose the longest experience to have an incredible elopement. What matters most is creating a day that feels like you. If you’re happiest wandering through a forest and exchanging vows beside a lake, a half day might be everything you need. If you’ve been dreaming of hiking in the mountains, exploring the coast, and making an entire adventure out of your wedding day, a full day gives us more room to make that happen. And if you want to celebrate with loved ones and still have an entire adventure just for yourselves, two days might be the perfect fit.

Let’s Create an Elopement Day That Feels Like You

I’ve spent years exploring Olympic National Park, both as a photographer and in my own free time. I hike these trails, backpack into the mountains, and spend as much time as possible discovering new corners of this incredible place. One of my favorite parts of working with couples is helping them figure out what their wedding day could actually look like. From finding locations that match your vision to building a timeline that makes sense, I’ll help you choose an experience and amount of coverage that fits what you’re dreaming of.
