How to Plan a Surprise Proposal at Lake Crescent | Will & Catherine’s Olympic National Park Proposal
Some proposals happen close to home, others become part of an adventure. When Will reached out to me from Toronto, he knew he wanted to propose to Catherine somewhere that felt unforgettable while they were visiting Washington. He envisioned incredible scenery, a quiet moment together, and a proposal she would never see coming.
After talking through several locations, we landed on one of my favorite places in Olympic National Park: the dock at Lake Crescent Lodge. With its crystal-clear water, towering mountains, and historic lodge tucked into the forest, it creates the perfect balance of breathtaking scenery and an intimate atmosphere. If you’re dreaming of planning your own surprise proposal in Olympic National Park, here’s exactly what the process looked like, and how I helped to make sure everything went smoothly from the first phone call to the moment he heard “yes.”
Why we chose Lake Crescent
Will wanted an epic view, which Lake Crescent worked perfectly for. The dock offers mountain views without requiring a hike. The historic lodge, lakeshore, and deep green mossy forest all within walking distance. It has easy access, making it a great option for visitors unfamiliar with the area. It also helped to have cell service so we could easily communicate right up until the big moment.
How We Planned the Surprise
One of the biggest concerns almost every proposer has is keeping everything a surprise. That’s where I come in! Every proposal begins with a planning call. We spend time talking about your relationship, your vision for the proposal, and what kind of scenery feels most like the two of you. I’ll recommend locations based on the season, lighting, privacy, accessibility, and overall experience you’re hoping to create.
Once we’ve settled on the perfect location, we walk through all of the details together. We’ll decide exactly where you’ll propose, what your cue will be, and how we’ll make sure everything happens naturally without raising any suspicion. On the day of the proposal, we stay in touch by text or email so I know where you are and when you’re arriving. I’ll already be waiting nearby, usually blending in as just another person enjoying the scenery with a camera. By the time you arrive, everything is in place, allowing you to stay focused on the moment instead of worrying about logistics.
The Big Moment
As you can imagine, Catherine was totally surprised as Will walked her down to the end of the dock and got down on one knee. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves!
After the “Yes”
One of my favorite parts of proposal photography actually happens after the proposal itself. Once the nerves settle down and you’ve had a chance to soak in the excitement, we simply wander together for an engagement session around the area. There’s no pressure, just the chance to celebrate while capturing all of the joy, laughter, and disbelief that you’re officially engaged. At Lake Crescent, that means exploring the shoreline, wandering through the towering evergreens surrounding the lodge, and taking advantage of the incredible mountain views from several different locations. Since the proposal is already over, couples are relaxed, completely themselves, and often tell me this ends up being one of their favorite parts of the day.
Why I Love Photographing Proposals
There’s something incredibly special about being trusted with one of the biggest surprises of someone’s life. For weeks, or sometimes months, I get to help plan all the little details behind the scenes. We talk through locations, timing, backup plans, and ways to keep everything a secret. By the time proposal day arrives, it almost feels like we’re both holding our breath, waiting for that one unforgettable moment. My job isn’t just to take beautiful photos. It’s to make sure you can be fully present. You shouldn’t have to worry about where to stand, whether the light is right, or if I’m in position. I’ll take care of all of that so you can focus on the person standing in front of you.
And then comes my favorite part, that instant after the “yes!” The nerves melt away, the excitement sets in, and the two of you get to soak up the fact that your next chapter has officially begun. Those first hugs, happy tears, laughter, and moments of disbelief are some of the most genuine emotions I’ll ever have the privilege of documenting. Getting to witness stories like Will and Catherine’s is something I’ll never take for granted. It’s an honor every single time, and I leave every proposal feeling just as excited as the couple does.
