I still consider myself a new mom, and therefore consider Mother’s Day to be a fairly new holiday in my honor. Being that my birthday is just a few days away from the holiday, we decided to make a little weekend out of it this year and head down the coast for some Westport surfing. Westport is a small town of about 2,000 people on the southern coast of Washington. It’s location, about 2.5 hours south of Seattle, makes for an excellent day trip or even better overnight. If you like the beach or surfing, Westhaven State Park offers all of it. Soft sandy beaches, minimal seaweed, and great waves. We’ve surfed here many times from the months of July through November and really love spending time here no matter the weather.

If you’re up for camping, Twin Harbors State Park offers campsites that can be reserved during the summer months or first-come, first-serve in winter. Over our visits there, we love staying at Loge. With options for both hotel rooms and camping/covered camping, a coffee and beer bar, community room with full kitchen, and community grill, this place has everything we need. We think it’s a really nice option when you don’t want to go full rustic, but want to have some amenities on site. They also have surfboard rentals, a wetsuit drying room, and showers. This time we stayed at Loge in one of their covered campsites. While it didn’t rain this time around, that cover sure is appreciated when it does!

We arrived on Friday afternoon and quickly rallied to get to the beach for an evening surf session. The sunset was absolutely gorgeous and we so enjoyed our strolls through the sand. We cooked up a little bit of vegan tortilla soup that I’d made in advance and ate right there on the beach using our backcountry camp stove. It was a such a great way to enjoy the evening.

The next day we were up and at it as we knew the surf was going to be best in the morning. David was up first and I was on kid-duty hanging with Banks on the beach. We ended up running into one of the other families that was camping next to us at Loge. That’s the great thing about Loge – their ability to help build community around surfing. Over the weekend we actually ended up meeting two families that had little kids and they ended up playing together the whole weekend! They had a blast on the beach and running around the grassy space at Loge in the evenings.

After a few hours on the beach, we headed over to our favorite sandwich stop in Westport – The Mermaid. We grabbed a beer and one of their fabulous sandwiches and warmed ourselves up at the fire pit off of the patio. Those sandwiches sure hit the spot after a day at the beach! The winds picked up later that day and we ended up spending the rest of the evening lounging at Loge. We watched the kids run around, ate some chicken teriyaki, sipped beers and made s’mores by the fire. Banks was particularly fond of the s’mores, which probably comes as no surprise 🙂

The next day was Mother’s Day. Me and the two other mamas that I met got into our wetsuits for the morning surf session. The waves were super fun and playful that day and we had a blast! Banks proceeded to collect another pound of sand in his pants, which of course ended up all over my car and the house. We made another stop for sandwiches on our way out of town and made the trek back to the city to enjoy Mother’s Day dinner with David’s family. All I can say is, showers have never felt better than after 3 days of camping near the beach! It was a great weekend and I can’t wait to get back out there and continue to improve my surf skills!
